Researchers have reported that companion robots have had positive effects on older adults with depression. However, there has been little quantitative analysis on the relationship between robot design and depression. To address this, we surveyed 191 older adults and investigated the impact of age, gender and depression level on design preferences for companion robots. We focused on toy-sized companion robots and evaluated three design elements: type, weight and material. The findings show that baby-type robots were the most preferred by older (...) adults. They favoured the lightest weights and microfibre materials, regardless of the independent variables. Moreover, robot weight preferences varied significantly with the level of depression. Highly depressed older adults disliked heavy robots. These preliminary findings suggest that companion robots need to be designed with careful consideration of their physical characteristics and potential psychological effects. (shrink)

Percebemos, portanto, que não se trata de assuntos que orbitam um único eixo. Pelo contrário, o que o professor Teodório conseguiu reunir aqui foi uma grande e variada produção de áreas que, num primeiro e raso olhar, parecem desconexas, embora a intenção não tenha sido uma conexão entre elas. Reside aí a grandeza da obra, a diversidade. Por essa particularidade, já (...) merece o nosso apreço e, mais ainda, pela ousadia de organizar um livro que, longe de ser só uma coletânea de artigos, é a expressão máxima daquilo que é característica dos institutos federais, a produção e difusão da ciência e da tecnologia. Ainda mais num campus longe dos centros urbanos. Foi com tal visão que o professor Teodório reuniu essa grande e valiosa contribuição para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa no extremo sul do Piauí. Assim, fica aqui a nossa admiração por esse profissional que engrandece o campus Corrente, o Instituto Federal e o estado do Piauí. (shrink)

The main purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of perceived HR practices on affective commitment and turnover intention. This study explored which HR practices were relatively more important in predicting affective commitment and turnover intention. A total of 302 employees from the United States and 317 from South Korea completed the same questionnaires for assessing the aforementioned relationships. The results illustrated that among perceived HR practices, internal mobility had the most significant association with turnover intention in both (...) the US and South Korea. While internal mobility was a stronger predictor of affective commitment for the US sample, training was the most important variable for predicting affective commitment in South Korea. The second purpose of the study was to examine whether individuals’ positive affect influences the relationship between perceived HR practices and affective commitment and turnover intention. In the US, positive affect moderated the relationship between perceived HR practices and affective commitment and turnover intention such that the relationships were stronger for individuals reporting high positive affect relative to those reporting low positive affect. However, these relationships were not significant in South Korea. We discuss the implications of these results, study limitations, and practical suggestions for future research. (shrink)

Despite the increasing number of studies on user experience and user interfaces, few studies have examined emotional interaction between humans and deformable objects. In the current study, we investigated how the anthropomorphic design of a flexible display interacts with emotion. For 101 unique 3D images in which an object was bent at different axes, 281 participants were asked to report how strongly the object evoked five elemental emotions (e.g., happiness, disgust, anger, fear, and sadness) in an online survey. People rated (...) the object’s shape using three emotional categories: happiness, disgust–anger, and sadness–fear. It was also found that a combination of axis of bending (horizontal or diagonal axis) and convexity (bending convexly or concavely) predicted emotional valence, underpinning the anthropomorphic design of flexible displays. Our findings provide empirical evidence that axis of bending and convexity can be an important antecedent of emotional interaction with flexible objects, triggering at least three types of emotion in users. BackgroundThis study aimed to identify the healthcare providers’ experience and perspectives toward end-of-life care decisions focusing on end-of-life discussion and physician’s order of life-sustaining treatment documentation in Korea which are major parts of the Life-Sustaining Treatment Act.MethodsA cross-sectional survey was conducted using a questionnaire developed by the authors. A total of 474 subjects—94 attending physicians, 87 resident physicians, and 293 nurses—participated in the survey, and the data analysis was performed in terms of frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation using the (...) SPSS 24.0 program.ResultsStudy results showed that respondents were aware of terminal illness and physician’s order of life-sustaining treatment in Korea well enough except for some details. Physicians reported uncertainty in terminal state diagnosis and disease trajectory as the most challenging. Study participants regarded factors (related to relationships and communications) on the healthcare providers’ side as the major impediment to end-of-life discussion. Study respondents suggested that simplification of the process and more staff are required to facilitate end-of-life discussion and documentation.ConclusionBased on the study results, adequate education and training for better end-of-life discussion are required for future practice. Also, a simple and clear procedure for completing a physician’s order of life-sustaining treatment in Korea should be prepared and legal and ethical advice would be required. Since the enactment of the Life-Sustaining Treatment Act, several revisions already have been made including disease categories, thus continuous education to update and support clinicians is also called for. Background In April 2019, our hospital transitioned to an electronic patient record system and patient portal. MyGOSH enables young people aged 12 years or older and their parents to access results, documentation, appointments, and to communicate with their care team. Aims A focus group was conducted to explore the ethical and legal considerations of young people and their parents using a patient portal from the perspective of hospital Ethics Committee members. Participants and research context Members of the hospital (...) Paediatric Bioethics Centre were recruited. Written informed consent was provided by all participants. Research design The focus group discussion was recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. Ethical considerations Health Research Authority Research Ethics Committee Approval was granted by London Southeast REC. Results Four themes, and sub-themes, were identified: granting access – complexities of assessing competence/capacity, exclusion from MyGOSH due to non-disclosure of diagnosis, and truth-telling; inequalities resulting in inequities – complexities of inequity in access; responding to change – providing support and managing expectations; engagement, empowerment and understanding – data safety, empowering young people to take ownership of their health data, a one-size fits all system may not meet the needs of all families, and early engagement with young people/parents. Discussion Giving families portal access can increase engagement, empowering them to be more involved in care, yet poses challenges for all. Complexities exist in the assessment for portal access, and supporting and managing user expectations whilst providing an equitable service. Conclusions Ongoing support is required for all stakeholders following patient portal implementation to navigate the ethical and legal complexities, and to promote equity and portal utility for patient benefit. This article explores young children’s moral sensitivity regarding online disclosure. Drawing on psychological theory, moral sensitivity is defined as the ability to express and show moral consideration in terms of empathy, role-taking and pro-social moral reasoning. Twenty-five preadolescent children aged 9 to 11, all living in Belgium, were asked in focus group interviews to share their reflections about and experiences with self-disclosure and privacy in internet environments. The findings demonstrate that young children are capable of imagining the moral (...) consequences of disclosing personal information about oneself and about others. Their moral reflections are embedded in a more general concern of children’s vulnerability to other, more powerful information circulators in their social networks, such as older children, siblings, but also parents or the internet crowd. A strong sense of children’s entitlements to online privacy is articulated. Also, the decision of disclosing personal information about the other is carefully considered when the other is emotionally important to the children. (shrink)

BackgroundThe interRAI 0–3 Early Years was recently developed to support intervention efforts based on the needs of young children and their families. One aspect of child development assessed by the Early Years instrument are motor skills, which are integral for the maturity of cognition, language, social-emotional and other developmental outcomes. Gross motor development, however, is negatively impacted by pre-term birth and low birth weight. For the purpose of known-groups validation, an at-risk sample of preterm children using the interRAI 0–3 (...) Early Years was included to examine correlates of preterm risk and the degree of gross motor delay.MethodsParticipant data included children and families from 17 health agencies in Ontario, Canada. Data were collected as part of a pilot study using the full interRAI 0–3 Early Years assessment. Correlational analyses were used to determine relationships between prenatal risk and preterm birth and bivariate analyses examined successful and failed performance of at-risk children on gross motor items. A Kruskal-Wallis test was used to determine the mean difference in gross motor scores for children born at various weeks gestation.ResultsCorrelational analysis indicated that prenatal and perinatal factors such as maternal nicotine use during pregnancy did not have significant influence over gross motor achievement for the full sample, however, gross motor scores were lower for children born pre-term or low birth weight based on bivariate analysis. Gross motor scores decreased from 40 weeks’ gestation, to moderate to late preterm, and to very preterm, however extremely preterm performed comparably to very preterm.InterpretationThe interRAI 0–3 was evaluated to determine its efficacy and report findings which confirm the literature regarding delay in gross motor performance for preterm children. Findings confirm that pre-term and low birth weight children are at greater risk for motor delay via the interRAI 0–3 Early Years gross motor domain. (shrink)

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:Historical Representation and the Nation-State in Romantic Belgium (1830–1850)Jo TollebeekThe transformation of the Ancien Régime society of estates into the modern state system as it exists in Europe today was concluded during the “long nineteenth century.” This process of transformation came about in two waves. In a first wave—during the decades preceding and following the French Revolution, roughly the years 1780-1848—the framework for the nation-state was created. It was (...) mainly the liberal bourgeoisie which stood at the forefront. After the Congress of Vienna, where the “ante bellum” situation had been restored, it led more or less successful national revolutions in Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, and Poland. In a second wave, starting with the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 and ending with the First World War, the framework of the nation-state was filled in. In those years a growing number of social groups found accommodation in the liberal house, which they also managed thoroughly to rebuild. This period can be described as the phase of integrated nationalism.Together with the nation-state came the rise of modern national his-toriography. The most well-known exponents of this typically nineteenth-century genre were the monumental outlines of national pasts which started appearing from 1890 onward. Karl Lamprecht in Germany (Deutsche Geschichte, 1890–1909), Pieter Jan Blok in the Netherlands (Geschiedenis van het Nederlandsche Volk, 1892–1908), Henri Pirenne in Belgium (Histoire de Belgique, 1900–1932), and Ernest Lavisse and his collaborators in France (Histoire de France, 1901–11) all gave their respective countries’ pasts an impressive, scholarly design. The first phase of the emergence of the nation-state, however, was also ac-companied by a stream of national histories. Johannes von Müller in Switzerland (Geschichten Schweizerischer Eidgenossenschaft, 1786–1808), Simonde de [End Page 329] Sismondi in Italy (Histoire des Républiques italiennes du Moyen Age, 1807–18), Augustin Thierry in France (Lettres sur l’Histoire de France, 1820–27), and Willem Bilderdijk in the Netherlands (Geschiedenis des Vader-lands, posthumously 1833–53) all became authors of patriotic and romantically tinted surveys and studies of (fragments from) their own national history.The work of this second group of historians fits with the cultural nationalism which took root during the last decades of the eighteenth and the beginning of the nineteenth centuries and which is sometimes considered to have been the heart of romantic nationalism. 1 The supporters of this nationalism were con-vinced that culture, lifestyle, and social institutions could only be understood as the expression of the “soul,” the “spirit,” or the “character” of a people or nation. They tried to deduce this individual character through the language, popular literature, art, and “national” (as opposed to Roman) law, as is demonstrated by the Gaelic revival in Ireland. 2 History, however, also attracted their interest; the nation and the people were after all considered to be dynamic entities which developed along the lines of a multiple causal process. In England, for example, where nationalism arose as a protest against excessive foreign—French—cultural influence, a group of historians, among them Catherine Macaulay and John Pinkerton, started publishing nationalistic histories during the early years of George III’s reign, paying special attention to the origin of the English people. 3 Such cultural nationalism could, however, easily take on political overtones, especially when it was the nationalism of a people who were either stateless or dispersed throughout different states, or whose state was still young.These earliest national histories were meant as a contribution to the formation, consolidation, and confirmation of a national identity. Their writers had to lend unity, specificity, and continuity to the national past. They had to, as Novalis observed in 1798, “organize historical essentials.” 4 Their work was less a matter of reconstruction than of construction. This paper examines human planning abilities, using as its inspiration planning techniques developed in artificial intelligence. AI research has shown that in certain problems partial‐order planners, which manipulate partial plans while not committing to a particular ordering of those partial plans, are more efficient than total‐order planners, which represent all partial plans as totally ordered. This research asks whether total‐order planning and/or partial‐order planning are accurate descriptions of human planning, and if different populations use different planning techniques. Using a simple (...) planning task modeled after tasks designed in artificial intelligence we tested 7–8 year‐old children, 11–13 year‐old children, adult controls, and adults with damage to the prefrontal cortex. We found that adults and older children exhibited performance on planning tasks of varying complexity which matched that of artificial partial‐order planners, and that this pattern of performance did not vary with multiple presentations of the planning task. In contrast, young children and adults with damage to the prefrontal cortex exhibited performance matching that of artificial total‐order planners. This pattern of performance did vary, however, with multiple presentations of the planning task, with the young children and adults with cortical damage displaying aspects of total‐order planning. In a further study we found that adolescents who had sustained damage to the prefrontal cortex as children displayed two different patterns of performance; when measures of reaction time were analyzed they revealed a pattern of performance suggestive of partial‐order plan representations. However, analyses of the adolescents' protocols revealed a pattern of performance suggestive of total‐order plan representations. Background: The law and literature about children’s consent generally assume that patients aged under-18 cannot consent until around 12 years, and cannot refuse recommended surgery. Children deemed pre-competent do not have automatic rights to information or to protection from unwanted interventions. However, the observed practitioners tend to inform young children s, respect their consent or refusal, and help them to “want” to have the surgery. Refusal of heart transplantation by 6-year-olds is accepted. Research question: What are possible reasons to (...) explain the differences between theories and practices about the ages when children begin to be informed about elective heart surgery, and when their consent or refusal begins to be respected? Research design, participants and context: Research methods included reviews of related healthcare, law and ethics literature; observations and conversations with staff and families in two London hospitals; audio-recorded semi-structured interviews with a purposive sample of 45 healthcare professionals and related experts; interviews and a survey with parents and children aged 6- to 15-years having elective surgery (not reported in this paper); meetings with an interdisciplinary advisory group; thematic analysis of qualitative data and co-authorship of papers with participants. Ethical considerations: Approval was granted by four research ethics committees/authorities. All interviewees gave their informed written consent. Findings: Interviewees explained their views and experiences about children’s ages of competence to understand and consent or refuse, analysed by their differing emphases on informed, signified or voluntary consent. Discussion: Differing views about children’s competence to understand and consent are associated with emphases on consent as an intellectual, practical and/or emotional process. Conclusion: Greater respect for children’s practical signified, emotional voluntary and intellectual informed consent can increase respectful understanding of children’s consent. Nurses play a vital part in children's practitioner-patient relationships and physical care and therefore in all three elements of consent. (shrink)

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama tarpukario Lietuvos jaunosios kartos katalikų intelektualų požiūris į kapitalizmą ir jo funkcionavimo ypatumus. Atskleidžiama, kad jaunieji katalikai intelektualai taikliai pastebėjo ir įvardijo realius to meto kapitalizmo ekonominius procesus, bet vertino juos remdamiesi ne ekonominėmis kategorijomis, o moralinėmis normomis. Pagrindinį dėmesį jie sutelkė į neigiamus jo socialinius padarinius, stengėsi atskleisti jų įtaką žmogaus dvasiai ir individo saviraiškai. Straipsnyje teigiama, kad nors jie ir pripažino, kad pagrindinis kapitalizmo dėsnis – pelno siekimas ir kaupimas – neišvengiamai provokuoja socialinę įtampą tarp darbdavių (...) (savininkų) ir samdomųjų darbininkų, tačiau manė, kad tą įtampą galima įveikti vieninteliu būdu: darbdaviams ir darbininkams geranoriškai ir sąmoningai ribojant savo egoizmą, ieškant ne konfrontacijos, o bendradarbiavimo (partnerystės). Ekonominio veikimo rezultatai turi būti matuojami ne tik ekonominiu (naudos), bet ir etiniu (neprieštaringumo individo saviraiškos siekiams) masteliu. (shrink)

Plėtojamos šios tezės: 1) akademininkas – dvigubas agentas, ne tik dirbdamas skirtingose institucijose, bet ir priklausydamas skirtingiems akademiniams lygmenims, mokslo idėjoms migruojant iš vienos akademinės teritorijos į kitą; 2) tik priklausydamas tam tikro mito bendrijai, kurios aplinkoje jis formuojasi drauge formuodamas šį mitą, akademininkas tampa savimi; 3) būdamas vienas akademininkas netapatus sau, kitaip tariant, jo nėra be akademinio fono, kurio mito ugdytinis būdamas ir kurį keisdamas (...) jis siektų savo tapatumo; 4) nė viena iš akademinių bendrijų, besivaržančių dėl ribinių teritorijų, komunikuodamos nepraranda teritorijų, priešingai, jos abi išplečia savo žemes, prisijungdamos naujus tyrimo pakraščius bei šalutinius kelius, kurie galiausiai pakeičia ir centro vietą bei vieškelių kryptį; 5) finansuodama akademinių teritorijų įdirbimą valstybė ne tik kontroliuoja universitetus, bet ir prižiūri, kad nebūtų peržengtos nustatytos akademinės veiklos ribos: universitetų karas, sukeldamas nusistovėjusių galios komunikacijoskanalų sumaištį, klibintų valdžios pozicijas; 6) skaldydama ir valdydama valdžia siekia pačių akademininkų rankomis užgniaužti bet kokius kūrybinius ekscesus ir įtvirtinti galios komunikaciją, kurios kanalu tampa akademinis mitas – mokslinės žiūros ir mokslinio žargono visuma, plėtojama tam tikrame universitete; 7) universitetas (ne tik privatus) tampa medija, ne tik pratęsdamas visuomenės vartojimo lūkesčius, bet ir užtikrindamas vartotojiškos visuomenės mainų likvidumą; 8) akademinis regionas – būtina mokslinio mito gyvavimo sąlyga, gyvybinė aplinka, kurioje mitas ne tik skleidžiasi, bet ir įgauna naujas gyvybės formas; 9) ekspertizės, siekiant atidalyti kokybiškas ir nekokybiškas akademines teritorijas, yra magijos salos racionaliame akademinio mito vandenyne. Straipsnyje, remiantis pusiau struktūruotų biografinių interviu duomenimis, nagrinėjama lietuvių diasporos Kazachstane antrosios ir trečiosios kartų atmintis ir jos naudojimas jų etninės tapatybės daryboje. Po sovietmečiu nutrūkusio atminties perdavimo iš kartos į kartą ši atmintis daugiausia atkuriama kaip šeimų atmintis ir dėl vyraujančios „paveldimos“ etninės tapatybės sampratos jos atkūrimas vyko ir vyksta drauge su lietuviškosios tapatybės atkūrimu. Šeimų atminties atkūrimo emociniai poreikiai palikuonių kartose sustiprina ir etninės tapatybės atkūrimo poreikį, kai kuriais atvejais ši atmintis tampa svarbiu jos ištekliu.

Straipsnio autorius pateikia argumentus, kaip pasirinktas Šliogerio meno kūrinys koreliuoja su jo aristoteliška substancinio individo koncepcija. Sykiu parodoma, kaip nuosekliai evoliucionavo Šliogerio hominizuotos Būties kritika nuo knygos Daiktas ir menas iki veikalo Transcendencijos tyla. Straipsnio pabaigoje išryškintas Šliogerio prieštaravimas (...) sau dėl dviejų nesuderinamų menininko samp­ratų: pirmas apie Menininką-žmogų, įliejantį „daugiau Būties“ į daiktą meno kūrinyje, negu kad tos Būties yra tame daikte gamtoje; antras apie tikrąjį Menininką-gamtą, kuris duoda daiktui „daugiau Būties“, negu jos randame žmogaus rankdarbyje. Šiame straipsnyje tiriami subtilūs Hobbes’o ir Kanto požiūrių į retoriką ir materializmą skirtumai, žvelgiant į juos platesniame politinės filosofijos kontekste. Nors abu šie filosofai buvo retorikos kritikai, tarp jų požiūrių išryškėja esminių skirtumų. Hobbes’as, būdamas monarchijos šalininkas, paveiktas Lukrecijaus, kritikavo retoriką iš materialistinės, antropologijos perspektyvos. Paradoksalu, tačiau jis pasitelkė retorines strategijas savo naujajame scientia civilis. Kantas, nors ir kritikuodamas tiek Lukrecijaus materializmą, tiek ir retoriką, į savo filosofijos perspektyvą integravo kai kuriuos suderinamus retorinius elementus, visų pirma susijusius su epikūrizmo tradicija. (...) Šiame straipsnyje tiriama, kaip du aptariamieji filosofai traktuoja paradiastole ir kokias pasekmes jų interpretacija turi jų politinei minčiai. Iškeliamas argumentas, kad abu mąstytojai, ieškodami racionalaus pamato politinei tvarkai, savąjį racionalumo sąvokos interpretavimą įtvirtina epikūrietiškame materializme, perkonfigūruodami retorinius elementus taip, kaip būtų patogu jų filosofijai. Straipsnyje išsiaiškinama, kad Kantas yra linkęs į respublikoniškas politines pažiūras; jis siekia kuo labiau padidinti piliečių autonomiją. Tai kategoriškai skiriasi nuo Hobbes’o orientacijos į monarchinę valdymo struktūrą. Šis tyrimas prisideda prie labiau niuansuoto suvokimo apie ankstyvąją Naujųjų laikų politinę mintį bei jos aktualumą šiuolaikinei respublikoniškai bei demokratinei teorijai. (shrink)

Remiantis garsaus medijų filosofo Michaelio Heimo tyrimais, nagrinėjamos sąsajos tarp kibernetinės erdvės ir technologijų raidos, išryškinamas jų poveikis transformacijoms, vykstančioms kibernetinės erdvės „žemėlapiavime“. Svarstant filosofijos ir sociologijos perspektyvas medijuotoje kultūroje pristatomi Franko Hartmanno tyrimai, skirti mediologijos problematikai, parodoma, kaip mediologijos rėmuose „žemėlapiuojama“ virtualioji tikrovė. Galiausiai, taikant mediologijos metodinę prieigą, nagrinėjami konk­retūs virtualios (augmentuotos) tikrovės pavyzdžiai. (...) The belief in free will has been frequently challenged since Benjamin Libet published his famous experiment in 1983. Although Libet’s experiment is highly dependent upon subjective reports, no study has been conducted that focused on a first-person or introspective perspective of the task. We took a neurophenomenological approach in an N = 1 study providing reliable and valid measures of the first-person perspective in conjunction with brain dynamics. We found that a larger readiness potential is attributable to more frequent occurrences (...) of self-initiated movements during negative deflections of the slow cortical potentials . These negative deflections occur in parallel with an inner impulse reported by an expert meditator which may in turn lead to a voluntary act. We demonstrate in this proof-of-principle approach that the first-person perspective obtained by an expert meditator in conjunction with neural signal analysis can contribute to our understanding of the neural underpinnings of voluntary acts. Antrojoje dalyje aptariamos vizualinės komunikacijos strategijos, įsivyraujančios humanitariniuose ir socialiniuose moksluose, svarstomas vizualumo vaidmuo jų suartėjimo ir sąveikos procese. Trečiojoje dalyje dėmesys sutelkiamas ties viena reikšmingiausių moderniosios visuomenės formų – minia, nagrinėjamas filosofinis ir sociologinis santykis su minia, išryškinamas esmiškai negatyvus filosofo požiūris į minią bei principinis bandymas nuo jos atsiriboti. Ketvirtojoje konkrečių minios atvaizdų analizei skirtoje straipsnio dalyje nagrinėjamos LTSR fotografo (...) Fišerio nuotraukos, vaizduojančios stalinistinėje epochoje populiariose priverstinėse šventinėse demonstracijose dalyvaujančią minią. Skirtingais rakursais žvelgiant į tuos pačius atvaizdus svarstoma, kokius filosofinius bei socialinius kontekstus jie gali atskleisti, išryškinami filosofinės interpretacijos ir sociologinės prieigos savitumai bei skirtumai. This paper gives an analysis of the Chinese distributivity marker dou 'all', which can occur not only with definite plural NPs but also with NPs whose determiner is a quantifier word such as mei 'every' or dabufen-de 'most'. Besides normal distributive predicates, it can also occur with certain types of collective predicates. The difficulties of giving a compositional interpretation to constructions of these kinds are discussed in detail. I show that we can solve those difficulties if we treat dou as (...) a generalized distributivity marker in the sense of Schwarzschild (1991, 1996), which distributes over the members of a plurality cover. Apart from the above topic, which is more narrowly a semantics topic, this paper also discusses some syntax-semantics interface issues related to the distribution of dou's associates. (shrink)

Straipsnyje parodoma, kad valstybės puoselėjamos vertybės (gėris, gerovė) – nėra mūsų, kaip individų, „vidinės vertybės“. Mūsų požiūris į tai, kas yra gerovė, nulemtas vidinės patirties, idealų ir prioritetų. Todėl tas valstybės siūlomas vertybes (gerovės supratimą) mes visada turime „pamatuoti“ pagal savąsias nuostatas, savo vertybių masteliu. Kadangi valstybės siūlomos vertybės yra „išorinės“ individo atžvilgiu, tai privalu jas ne tik aiškiai įvardyti, bet ir kritiškai įvertinti, siekiant išsiaiškinti, kokiu mastu jos eina su prievarta (koks jų „prievartos koeficientas“) ir kokiu mastu jos pripažįsta (...) individo teisę rinktis. Nors valstybės tikslai ir siūlomos vertybės yra išorinės individo atžvilgiu, tačiau norint jas realizuoti valstybei privalu ieškoti būdų, kaip pasiekti, kad žmonės jas priimtų, rasti joms adekvačią išraišką. Kitaip tariant, visi valstybės siekiai turi būti derinami su visuomenės narių siekiais ir optimaliausiu būdu tuos jų siekius išreikšti. Tik tuo atveju valstybės tikslai, puoselėjamos vertybės iš „išorinių“ gali virsti „vidinėmis“ – tapti individui savos ir daugiau ar mažiau priimtinos. O veikdamas sąmoningai ir kryptingai jis tuo pačiu padės valstybei realizuoti ir jos iškeltus tikslus. (shrink)

Corporate social responsibility has emerged as a concept for business from within developed, Western economies. Such economies are underpinned by functioning institutions, where compliance with regulation is assumed. Recently, however, the ability of this traditional understanding of CSR to take account of the different economic and institutional arrangements found in non-Western contexts has been challenged. It has been argued that CSR research needs to be more contextualized and that the Western interpretation and assumptions about what CSR is and how it (...) is enacted needs to be broadened and challenged to take account of different stages of economic development. With this argument in mind, this article presents a contextualized critique of CSR undertaken in the Russian Federation. Based on a qualitative study involving managers within privatized Russian firms, this article explores the type, nature, and scope of CSR undertaken and attendant motivation of firms to engage in CSR practice. By taking account of the historical and cultural antecedents of both the Soviet Union and the post-Soviet transition period, the author reveals that while the market is driving conventional forms of CSR within some Russian firms, the historical legacy of both the Soviet Union and more recent political developments have a stronger influence on the type and nature of CSR undertaken. These findings challenge the assumptions about both the voluntary nature of CSR and the prerequisites needed for CSR to take place. (shrink)

Straipsnyje nagrinėjama analitinės kalbos ir mokslo filosofijos raida Lietuvoje. Konstatuojama, kad analitinė filosofija Lietuvoje pradėta plėtoti XX amžiaus aštuntajame dešimtmetyje, kai Evaldas Nekrašas ir Rolandas Pavilionis paskelbė savo pirmųjų mokslo filosofijos ir kalbos filosofijos tyrinėjimų, kuriuose remiamasi analitine tradicija, rezultatus. Straipsnyje analizuojami jų ir kitų tyrėjų, kurie rėmėsi ta pačia tradicija, pirmiausia Algirdo Degučio ir Albino Plėšnio darbai. Analitinė filosofija buvo pirmoji nemarksistinės filosofijos kryptis, pradėta plėtoti pokarinėje Lietuvoje, todėl aštuntajame ir devintajame dešimtmečiuose ji atliko svarbų vaidmenį plečiant šalyje filosofinių (...) tyrinėjimų tematiką ir keičiant jų metodologinius pagrindus. Nors pastaruoju metu jos įtaka Lietuvos filosofijoje kiek sumažėjo, ji aiškiai juntama kai kuriuose pastarojo meto darbuose, kuriuose nagrinėjamos sąmonės filosofijos, priežastingumo, humanitarinių ir socialinių mokslų metodologijos problemos. Ji padarė nemažą poveikį ir pozityvizmo raidos bei politinės filosofijos problemų tyrimui.
